Gold Rush Days was a huge success! Thank you all for your donations of money and time. This day would have not been possible without your support.

4th graders are bringing home a field trip permit to be signed by parents. This will enable them to go to Del Norte HS by bus for a band concert on May 29.

3rd graders are bring home their latest X timed drill and a note about the grade-level awards ceremony to be held on May 18th at 11:20.

The character trait being featured in May and June is Fairness. Wear orange on Wednesdays during the months of May and June.

Parents, please help your children to remember to bring their parent-initialed Clean Slate Chart to class. I check it first thing every Monday morning.

MATH: We take Lightning Rods tests on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Progress reports are sent home on those days for parent initials. Forms need to be returned the next day in order to be updated with the current test results. Third grade students can prepare for these tests by downloading the drill their are currently working on from the Math Fact Practice Pages link. Fourth grade students’ test are 80–100 basic fact problems in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Typically, math homework is assigned Tuesday –Thursday nights. Check your child’s planner for specific assignments.

Grade 3:

From Mr. Romanowski: Between spring break and testing it took a long time to get through the unit on fractions, but we’ve made it. We took the test on Wednesday and the results were very good overall. Now we are moving into the next mini unit which covers three dimensional shapes. We will focus on learning the features of pyramids and prisms. Vocabulary will be an important part of this unit. We will be talking about faces, bases, edges, vertexes, parallel and perpendicular surfaces.

From Ms. Einspar: We are continuing with fractions as parts of a whole, mixed numbers. and writing and reading decimals. This unit also practices division with remainders and finding the solutions as a part of more complex word problems. We are wrapping up the unit and will assess on Thursday. Next week we will be working on mini unit F — three dimensional figures..

From Mrs. Penner:

Grade 4:

Mrs. King’s math students: We will continue in Unit 6, Decimal Numbers. The goal for Unit 6 is to develop an understanding of decimal numbers by using number lines and by relating decimal place values to whole number place values. Students will learn to order, compare, add, and subtract decimals. Students will also to round decimal numbers, estimate sums and differences of decimal numbers, and recognize what situations require safe estimates. There are 12 lessons in this unit. This week we will cover lessons 4–7.

From Mrs. Harvey: We are continuing our fractions unit with the “flipped classroom” model. Several students have had the opportunity to “test out” and are working on fabulous independent projects applying their knowledge and skills. The final projects will be posted in LearningPoint when they are complete. Parents can keep track of what we are learning in our LearningPoint shell ~ Harvey’s Math ~ CA Math Units ~ Fractions and Mixed Numbers Module.

From Ms. Medved: –In math, we are finishing up our unit on negative and positive numbers. Our next unit will be on probability.

Grades 3–4: In Language Arts:

In Reading : Fourth graders have finished reading By the Great Hoen Spoon and are wrapping up the unit activities. They will begin research

Third graders are working in our reading anthology. The present unit is Incredible Stories. We will be testing on the story, The Garden of Abdul Gasazi, by Chris Van Allsburg this week and taking a unit assessment.

For spelling/word study, our class will be working on the website: SpellingCity.com. I have purchased the premium account for this site. I have given all students their user and and password so they can log onto our class’ site. As of right now, I am continuing to asking students to work way through the 1000 most often used words in the English language. All lists have been added to the queue.

Grade 3 -In Science: We will continue a science unit on space this week.

Grade 4 –Science Science project grading sheet is coming home for a parent signature. Students are involved in a Gold Rush simulation game. Be sure to ask them about it. ;-)

As always, there’s so much to cover and so little time! Make it a great week. AND: WHBK (work hard; be kind)

STAR testing begins on Tuesday, April 17. There can be no parent volunteers during the morning hours, and because of this, we will not take our lightning rod drills this week. If you are at all anxious about what types of questions are on the test, you can log onto the California Department of Education and run a search on “released test questions.” I am very confident that your children will all do very well on this assessment.

Due to STAR testing, our language arts and math instruction will be very minimal. I will also not be assigning any homework this week. However, we do have a Reading Olympic Challenge going on, and it would be to every students’ advantage to take this opportunity to READ, READ, READ!

And, on a personal note, thank you for all of your well-wishes on the birth of my grandson. He is still in the NICU, and will probably be there until at least Wednesday. The holes in his lungs are slowly mending and we are now able to hold him…which I have yet to do! Soon.

Make it a fabulous learning week.

The character trait being featured in March and April is Respect. Wear yellow on Wednesdays during the months of March and April.

Parents, please help your children to remember to bring their parent-initialed Clean Slate Chart to class I check it first thing every Monday morning.

Grade 3:

From Mr. Romanowski: We continued working on fractions this week. The main concept we worked on was equivalency. Your child has an account on ixl.com which we have been using for practice. There is a lot of really good practice and review on that site for fractions as well as other concepts. Another good resource for reviewing is http://www.khanacademy.org/ This site has direct instruction videos on many, many skills and concepts.

From Ms. Einspar: We finished the mini unit on telling time and clock angles this week. Overall the test results were very good, but some students are making very careless mistakes. Please review the results with your child when the tests are returned on Monday. Now we are starting our study of fractions. I am focusing on the idea that fractions are just numbers. Just not whole numbers. One thing we will be doing to review for STAR testing is using IXL. This is a math practice website that is great for reviewing very specific math skills. We will be using it both in class and as homework at times. Each student has an account which helps follow their progress.

From Mrs. Penner:

Grade 4:

Mrs. King’s math students: Presently we are working in Unit 5, Fractions. Unit 5 builds upon the concepts of fractions. The activities in this unit help students gain a conceptual and practical understanding of the parts of fractions, relationships between fractions, and operations with fractions. Students are expected to apply their understanding of fractions to numeric calculations and real-world problem-solving situations. This includes comparisons with fractions, unit-pricing problems, and probability outcomes. There are 20 lessons in this unit. We are doubling up on some of the more basic lessons. It is anticipated that this week we will cover lesson 19 and review test on Tuesday. Our unit test will be given on Wednesday 4/11/12. Thursday we will begin mini unit E, Three Dimensional Figures.

From Mrs. Harvey: We are participating in 10 Marks “Math Madness” running through April 15 — we are in the top 10 classrooms as of last Monday — check our ranking on Mondays through link in Learning point / Harvey’s Math / Announcements. We are finishing up our measurement & positive and negative integers unit and the unit test is this Thursday! Math Marathon is Friday. We will be starting studying about fractions after STAR testing.

From Ms. Medved: –My kiddos are continuing to work with fractions. This week we are looking at comparing fractions, mixed and improper fractions. There will be a quiz on Friday on fractions.

Grades 3–4: In Language Arts:

In Reading : Fourth graders are working in the core literature book, By the Great Horn Spoon! It is a story about a boy and his butler going to the gold fields to strike it rich and save the family home back in Boston. Various reading and writing activities will be used as a follow-up to our daily reading.

Third graders are working in our reading anthology. The present unit is Incredible Stories. We will be reading the Mysterious Giant of Barletta and woking with the reading strategy of questioning.

For spelling/word study, our class will be working on the website: SpellingCity.com. I have purchased the premium account for this site. The bus will be leaving promptly at 9:15 a.m. We have 10 parents who have volunteered to go on this field trip, 60 parents from the entire grade level. Some parents may need to carpool and follow the bus to Old Town. Please bring a lunch and dress in layers. Also wear walking shoes!

EGG DROP: The Third Grade Egg Drop is going to be held this Friday after Friday Flag. We’d love to have you come watch if you’re in the area.

The character trait being featured in March and April is Respect. Wear yellow on Wednesdays during the months of March and April.

Parents, please help your children to remember to bring their parent-initialed Clean Slate Chart to class I check it first thing every Monday morning.

Grade 3:

From Mr. Romanowski: We finished the mini unit on telling time and clock angles this week. Overall the test results were very good, but some students are making very careless mistakes like leaving an answer blank. Please review the results which are in Friday folders.

It is anticipated that this week we will cover lessons 14–18, and that our unit test will be given on Wednesday of the week we return from Spring Break.

From Mrs. Harvey: We are participating in 10 Marks “Math Madness” running through April 15 — we are in the top 10 classrooms as of last Monday — check our ranking on Mondays through link in Learning point / Harvey’s Math / Announcements. - continuing to work on Measurement unit — customary and metric — each student is working on the concepts they need to learn through differentiation and small group work. We are moving into positive and neg integers.

From Ms. Medved: –My kiddos are continuing to work with fractions. This week we are looking at comparing fractions, mixed and improper fractions. There will be a quiz on Friday on fractions.

Grades 3–4: In Language Arts:

In Reading : Fourth graders have begun a core literature book, By the Great Horn Spoon! It is a story about a boy and his butler going to the gold fields to strike it rich and save the family home back in Boston. Various reading and writing activities will be used as a follow-up to our daily reading.

Third graders are finishing up a mini unit on trickster tales and are in the process of writing their own trickster tale.

Grade 3 -In Social Studies: This week, 3rd graders will be studying Unit 4, Lesson 3, What Bring our Communities and Country Together? Students will learn about the histories of important local and national landmarks, symbols, and essential documents that create a sense of community among citizens and exemplify cherished ideas. (eg. the US flag, the bald eagle, the statue of Liberty, the US Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the US Capitol) The test for this unit will be given on March 30.

Typically, math homework is assigned Tuesday –Thursday nights. Check your child’s planner for specific assignments.

Grade 3:

From Mr. Romanowski: Students did a great job of buzzing through unit 5 on multiplication. Most students have a firm grasp on both multiplication facts and the concept of multiplication. The only real problem some students had was rushing through the more complex, multi-step word problems. Next week we will be working on telling time and understanding elapsed time. Look on Learning Point for activities to help with those skills. (Especially elapsed time.)

From Ms. Einspar: We continue to both practice the memorization and the conceptual understanding of multiplication this week. We also are learning the associative property which shows that you can group factors in different ways the product stays the same. EX: (3 x 4) x 2 = 24 and 3 x (4 x 2) = 24 We will finished the unit take the test on Friday. The next mini unit covers time and elapsed time; clock and calendar. It is three lessons, so we will complete and test on it next week.

From Mrs. Penner: We started multiplication and division in the new book.

Grade 4:

Mrs. King’s math students: We are beginning Mini Unit D, Polygons and Circles. In Unit D, students construct and find the perimeter of polygons. Through guided exploration, they generalize what they have learned about polygons to develop an understanding of circles and the relationship of their diameter to their circumference. Students also extend their understanding of circles to allow them to read and understand circle graphs. Students apply their skills in adding and subtracting decimals to calculate elapsed time and total time. There are five lessons in this mini unit and it is anticipated that the unit test will be given next Monday or Tuesday.

From Mrs. Harvey: We are actually beginning a measurement unit — both customary and metric units of measure. We will also be learning about positive and negative integers, and we are continuing working on our on-going problem solving unit with weekly POWs.

From Ms. Medved: My math kiddos are working on Perimeter and Area We will probably take a quiz/ check up on Friday.

Grades 3–4: In Language Arts: In Reading Both third and fourth graders are using the Houghton Mifflin reading anthology as their text. The theme for third grade is celebrating traditions and for fourth grade, American stories. Various comprehension, grammar and spelling skills will be taught and reviewed following reading the stories.

In writing, we have been reviewing narratives, response to literature and summary writing in preparation for both the 3rd and 4th grade writing assessments to be given on March 6. Third grades is a district writing assessment and fourth grade’s is a state writing test. Wish us luck!

Grade 3 -In Social Studies: On Monday, we’ll start with this next phase of Social Studies. This week we plan on reading about the Kumeyaay, Missions, and hopefully Ranchos. We are reading each section in the booklet, and then summarizing and rewriting our our community history book. Later, when we finish, students have an art and writing project to complete. I hope we can finish the unit by the end of February.

Grade 4 -Social Studies: Mrs. Calder’s and Mrs. King’s 4th graders are working in Social Studies, Unit 2: Early people in California. In this unit, students have learned how the arrival of the Spanish changed the lives of the California Indians. Students have also learned how life in California changed when Mexico took over the area. This unit covers the exploration, mission and rancho period of time. We have completed all 8 lessons and this week we will review all of Unit 2 and prepare for the unit assessment that will be given on Thursday.
